His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph remembered making “75 phone calls” the day of the blast in Beirut, “just to make sure the people I know are still alive.”

The explosion on August 4 – captured on video seen around the world – killed more than 160 people, left hundreds of thousands of people homeless, and did extensive damage to buildings including St. George Orthodox Hospital and churches of the Antiochian Archdiocese of Beirut.

The leader of the Antiochian Archdiocese spoke at an event organized by Mr. John Abi Habib, the Honorary Consul of Lebanon in New Jersey; Mr. Eric Adams, President of the Brooklyn Borough; and New York City’s Lebanese community at Brooklyn Borough Hall on Tuesday, August 11, 2020.
