Photo: imkby.com On September 11, the Metropolis of Kaisariani, Vyronas, and Hymettus of the Greek Orthodox Church made an official statement on its website about a myrrh-streaming icon of the Most Holy Theotokos in a church in an Athens suburb.
The statement regarding the Consolation Icon of the Mother of God in the Church of St. Demetrius in Vyronas reads:
Honoring the work of our merciful Lord and Father and fulfilling a promise to support our brethren in difficult times, when love for the Lord is disappearing, we inform all our pious brethren that the Consolation Icon of the Theotokos, kept in the Church of St. Demetrius in Nea Elvetia, Vyronas, has been streaming myrrh.
During the reading of the Gospel passage for the feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos, parishioners noticed how the Consoler Icon of the Theotokos began to stream myrrh. During the censing, the priest went out through the Royal Doors and went to cense the icon. The faithful noticed the miracle and began to discuss why it happened.
The icon continued to stream for several days.
This was confirmed by the faithful who began to come to venerate the myrrh-streaming icon of the Theotokos.
The Metropolis interprets the fact that the Consolation Icon began to stream myrrh on the feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God as a sign from God that His Mother continues to comfort and support the faithful as she comforted and supported the Apostles and other faithful of the first Christian commnity when they were holed up “for fear of the Jews” (Jn. 19).
The church employee who first noticed the miracle commented:
The faithful were starting to come, so I wanted to wipe the icon and clean its surface because of coronavirus measures, and I noticed that her left eye was clouded and a tear was coming from it. I wiped it away; I thought it was some kind of external moisture. Then I walked away. After the reading of the Gospel, I decided to go look again, and I saw a tear running down from her right eye. I shivered, and my eyes welled up with tears.
