Now in its third year of operation, the Huși Diocese of the Romanian Orthodox Church’s program, “A backpack for the new school year” aims to help 1,400 children from needy families this year.

The program, operated by the Huşi Orthodox Philanthropy association, provides the children with new backpacks filled with necessary school supplies, reports the diocesan website.

It was carried out this year thanks to Romanian parishes in England and Italy, the Eastlines transportation company, and kind benefactors from throughout Romania.

The program distributes the supplies after the first few days of school, when it becomes clear what supplies are needed and who needs them the most. The first beneficiaries this year were 200 children from the Diocese of Southern Bessarabia.

More than 1,000 students from more than 30 localities have already received supplies as of today.

Last month, the Synodal Department for Social and Humanitarian Issues of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church distributed backpacks filled with school supplies to more than 70 children from needy families.
