Protest against Patriarch Bartholomew held in Kiev

Protestors gathered on Sophia Square in Kiev yesterday for a protest against Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, whose interference in the affairs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church led to wide-scale persecution against the Church.

Protestors held signs saying, “Bartholomew the monkey of Washington,” “Bartholomew the liar,” “Bartholomew the schismatic,” “Bartholomew the disgrace,” and others.

The outlet contacted the UOC administration, which clarified that the event was not organized by the Church. Protestors declined to comment for journalists.

The protest comes just weeks after Pat. Bartholomew insulted millions of Ukrainians with his letter to the Ukrainian outlet Cerkvarium in which he brazenly declared that His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine and the hierarchs with him are not canonical bishops of Ukraine, but merely hierarchs residing in Ukraine. Constantinople only “temporarily tolerates” the existence of these hierarchs in their own homeland, the Patriarch declared.

Several hierarchs of the Ukrainian Church have commented on the Patriarch’s incendiary words.

In response to an inquiry from the editors of the Ukrainian outlet Cerkvarium Patriarch Bartholomew clarifies that he only “temporarily tolerates” the ministry of the bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, who suddenly found themselves mere titular or residing hierarchs by the will of the Patriarchate of Constantinople ever since the creation of the “Orthodox Church of Ukraine.”

I am from the United States and I will also say that the United States should stay out of religious matters, not only the US, but in all the other places of the world, including Ukraine. I for one think that the people of Ukraine should decide the matter for themselves and be free of outside influences. Patriarch Bartholomew was 100% wrong in creating a church that has and is lead by bishops that have no apostolic succession. There are many canons that Patriarch Bartholomew has violated. And he will stand in judgment before God and he will answer for it. To all countries, stay out of Ukrainian religious matters and let them decide the matter for themselves.
