Only satanically proud Orthodox “Taliban” don’t listen to Constantinople, says Greek Archbishop of Toronto

Those who reject the Patriarchate of Constantinople’s claim to being “First Without Equals” rend the robe of Christ, lack an ecclesial consciousness, and are deserving of the title of Orthodox “Taliban,” Archbishop Sotirios of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Canada believes.

In an article published on the Archdiocesan website on January 15, “Are There ‘Taliban’ in the Orthodox Church? On the Absence of an Ecclesial Consciousness,” the Archbishop argues that anyone who does not wait to hear the true voice of the Church coming from Constantinople is full of “luciferian egoism.”

If you read certain Orthodox blogs, whether by Patriarch, hierarchs, priests, elders, or monks, you can see that the authors “lack love, peace, prudence, humility and judgment,” the Archbishop begins. Such authors are “self-proclaimed adherents of the Church,” and “One wonders whether these authors are really Orthodox Christians.”

“Above all, they lack an ecclesial consciousness,” Abp. Sotirios declares.

They must not remember the words of Christ, that we are not to judge, that divided kingdoms cannot stand, and that the love of many grows cold where lawlessness abounds, the Constantinople hierarch writes.

For Abp. Sotirios, the universally-recognized status of “first among equals” ultimately makes no sense. “When he who is first presides over a Holy Synod (of a local Autocephalous Church or of a Patriarchate), can someone else be considered first (or equal) to him? When the leading hierarch presides over an Ecumenical Council, can someone else be first (or equal) to him?” he asks.

Interestingly, the Archbishop then essentially makes the argument for “first among equals” when he writes: “Is it not the teaching of the Church that in a Synod—any Synod for that matter—he who is first does not decide alone but respects the majority of members? Is it not equally true that neither the members can decide on their own?”

Thus, the first cannot act alone, thoguht the Archbishop fails to note that that is precisely what Constantinople did in invading Ukrainian Church territory, and what the primates of Alexandria and Cyprus did in recognizing the schismatics.

But while the first cannot act alone, nor can the members of a Synod meet and act without the first. “Such a meeting would be an unlawful assembly or an uncanonical plot. Is this not the true teaching of the Orthodox Church?” Abp. Sotirios writes.

Those who understand and adhere to the teachings of the Church “do not tear the robe of Christ. They do not place themselves above the Church. They do not allow their egotism to dominate and make them believe that they are infallible.”

However, “all kinds of Orthodox ‘Taliban’ in the Orthodox press—to the extent that we can speak of a truly Orthodox press” present different opinions, and this “cannot be allowed to stand,” the Toronto hierarch asserts.

Some people try to interpret the will of God through their own egotism, and only repentance can fix that. “Orthodox Christians, whoever you are, you need to develop humility, prudence and an ecclesial consciousness,” Abp. Sotirios advises.

Those who possess a truly Orthodox phronema do not write on blogs, but wait to hear the true voice of the Church, which comes only from he who presides over a Synod or the Synod’s official representative. On the pan-Orthodox level, this would be the Patriarch of Constantinople.

“Everything else is the noise and racket of non-Orthodox voices brought on as a result of luciferian egotism,” the Archbishop concludes.

The order of the Phoenix in Greece has its roots in freemasonry.

What does this mean? His biography on the Archdiocesan website at the very end says that his is the grand commander of the order of the phoenix of Greece https://www.gometropolis.org/metropolitan/biography/

LET'S GET THIS GOING ALREADY. WE'RE ALL SICK OF THESE WOLVES IN SHEEPS CLOTHING, PROJECTING THEIR SINS ONTO THE VICTIM, CRYING OUT IN PAIN AS THEY STRIKE THE CHURCH.

Archibishop Sotirios of Canada is irrelevant and no one cares for his "brand" of Orthodoxy. Just ask what his flock really thinks about him.

"The first without equal" sounds so bad (and in response to "the First among equals " ) that only the defense or imposition of this principle can be worse. Even " The first without equal" among sinners doesn't sound good !

I am not sure how to submit stories to this site but it is probably worth reporting on Met Sotirios latest podcast. In it he tries to say the elders of the Church are leading the flock to themselves and not to Christ and that the Jesus Prayer isn't a good form of prayer and we should do what he recommends instead. On Youtube the title of the video is: Orthodox Voice (January 24, 2021): 14th Sunday of Luke. The channel name is GOMetropolisToronto. Here is the link but I removed the dot so you can just copy and paste the link and remove '(dot)' and ad an actuall '.' instead: youtu(dot)be/dH8wAQCTs8w

I dare to say the true voice of the Church comes from Christ...but I still can see the abp.'s point... He desires to preserve unity, but his language deepens division. I think it's scary and unacceptable that we're not even allowed to think differently without being labeled lucifers and terrorists. There's something very unhealthy and inhumane about it...and this spirit is manifesting outside the Church as well. Let God deal with the enemies of the Church and let's not pour out vitriol on our own brothers...

No wonder Greeks in Toronto leave their churches. First the scandal with the spoons for Holy Communion, now he's calling them Talibans. I guess this is "pastoral care of the flock". Anaxios!!!

St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco had the opposite opinion. Of these two - I'd prefer to spend an afterlife in the same place as St. John... https://orthochristian.com/115619.html

It's funny how they project upon others what is entirely true about themselves!! It would be even funnier if they didn't actually believe their own narrative, but unfortunately they are so blind that they cant see themselves committing any wrong at all. They truly believe that they are flawless, infallible and that they do not behave like modern day nazis and marxists, demanding that everyone obey them no matter what they do and how they behave and whoever does not obey them are to be labeled as "enemies of the Church"! Truly God is angry with us, because why else would the Orthodox Church be full of such bishops? This is God's wrath against the Orthodox.

Delusional or not, Constantinople has a lot of help from a high level politician who got his political start here in Wichita with the monetary and personal support of the Koch Brothers. They hate Russia. That man is Mike Pompeo. He is a formidable man of worldly power even with Trump out of office. He is scary mean, intelligent and without conscience as far as I can tell. Do any of our Hierarchs have the fortitude and humility to say no? God help them all. Do not think that the delusion cannot be sold or forced on other hierarchs.

Maybe the Bishop of Rome and Partiarch Bartholomew should just cut cards to figure out primacy of jurisdiction. High card wins. Once they can sort that amongst themselves then there won't ever be a question of who is truly first without equals and they rest of their brother bishops can just fall in line.

I wonder if the good archbishop be prepared to demonstrate from the Canons and Tradition of the Church his insistence that First among Equals is equivalent to First without Equals? ????

One who is in league with earthly powers such as is secretary of state Mike Pompeo and the CIA has openly declared his allegiance, not to God but to corruption. abuse and the Pope as so many times that imposter Bartholomew has stated himself. The Greeks must decide, do they want a Hellenistic/CIA/sect/Satan or the true path to God meaning united with all other of God's curches under God's canon laws

So long Greek Orthodoxy, you had a good run. Off to ROCOR

I've got news for the Archbishop. The Patriarch of C'Pole does not represent the true voice of the Church.

It's interesting that he uses the word Taliban, which is understood in North America as a terrorist organization. The terrorist epithet is being rather cavalierly thrown around these days in liberal politics as well, to denigrate people of a more conservative bent, who also want their voices to be heard. It is a buzzword that gives liberals carte blanche against conservatives, enabling censorship, and opening the doors to legal measures against them. Met. Sotiros has overturned centuries of Orthodox ecclesiological understanding, put his foot on it, and declares that anyone who tries to release it from its captivity is an enemy of the people. Frightening.

I saw this article on the Orthodox Times site and sent a response to it although that site does not publish comments. Ironic that the Archbishop compares critics of Patriarch Bartholomew as "Taliban". If there are "Taliban" like elements in Orthodoxy it would be among those who engage in violence and physical force among others such as the schismatics against the canonical Orthodox in Ukraine. Those like the supporters of Patriarch Bartholomew who are trying to overthrow the conciliar tradition of the Orthodox Church should be the ones compared to the Taliban considering the Patriarch's insatiable appetite for both ecclesiastical and secular political power. Considering also the past use of force against the monks of the Esphigmenou Monastery on Mount Athos which was ordered by Patriarch Bartholomew, the Archbishop really is accusing the wrong side of being like the "Taliban".

Archbishop Sotirios is truly delusional!
