The Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church met today in Tbilisi under the chairmanship of His Holiness Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II.

Several issues were discussed, according to the head of the Patriarchate’s press service Archpriest Andria Jagmaidze, but there was no talk of forcing Pat. Ilia off the Patriarchal throne, as was predicted by an anonymous group calling themselves religious “experts.”

After the Patriarchate announced that the Synod would meet, the so-called “Association of Religions Experts” issued a statement claiming that Russian-backed bishops were planning to overthrow Pat. Ilia and install his Locum Tenens Metropolitan Shio of Senaki and Chkhorotsqu on the throne.

Fr. Andria characterized the statement as “fantasies.” The Association’s main purpose seems to be to create conflict between the Georgian and Russian Churches.

The minutes of today’s meeting will be published in a few hours, Fr. Andria said, reports the Echo of the Caucasus.

The Synod discussed issues surrounding the David-Gareij Monastery complex along the Georgian-Azerbaijani border, the topic of vaccination, and issues “from a moral point of view.” The hierarchs found agreement on a number of issues, Fr. Andria reported.
