A new church is being constructed for the Arab Christians of northern Israel, which, according to the plan of His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem, will become a spiritual stronghold for all local Orthodox Christians, who have remained faithful to Christ despite numerous political changes over the ages.

Sharing the concerns of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem for its long-suffering flock, the Russian Church also made a contribution to the church that is currently under construction.

His Holiness Patriarch Kirill donated a carved altar table for the main altar in honor of the Nativity of the Mother of God, as well as altar tables for each of the two side altars, reports the Russian Spiritual Mission in Jerusalem.

The altars were carved in workshops in Cyprus.

On February 28, Archimandrite Alexander (Elisov) and Hieromonk Dometian (Markarian), the head and deputy head of the Russian Spiritual Mission respectively, visited the village of Sakhnin in northern Israel where the church is being built.

Fr. Alexander met with representatives of the parish community, who were encouraged by the participation of the Russian Church in their work. The parish council expressed its gratitude to Pat. Kirill, noting that his kind gesture will remain in the memory of the local Christians for generations to come.

In late January, the Russian Spiritual Mission celebrated the centenary of the transfer of the relics of the Alapayevsk Martyrs, the Grand Duchess and New Martyr St. Elizabeth and her monastic companion St. Barbara, to Jerusalem at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Gethsemane.
