Violent schismatics are far from the Christian spirit—Met. Timothy of Jerusalem Patriarchate (+VIDEO)

The schismatics who engage in the violent seizure of churches and physical attacks on those defending their churches are far from the Christian spirit. It is frightening to imagine that people could claim to be Orthodox on the one hand, and yet be so enflamed with such hatred on the other, commented Metropolitan Timothy of Bostra after watching the film “The Faithful: A Hymn of Love” about the persecuted faithful of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Met. Timothy, the head of the Jerusalem Patriarchate’s Exarchate in Cyprus, in comments for the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, said that, “It is scary to imagine that people, who are claiming to be Orthodox, are so engulfed by hate that they seize churches with violence, break down doors, persecute their own compatriots—both spiritually and physically, persecute them, and divide the Church.”

Such violence is disgusting, he stated unequivocally. And such people are very far from Christianity:

“This only proves that those involved in these actions are far from the Christian spirit and teaching, which is characterized by love and mercy even with regard to enemies. And what is more shameful is that such things are committed by members of the so-called ‘Orthodox Church of Ukraine.’”

While calling themselves Orthodox, these people, in fact, serve the interests of the enemies of the Orthodox Church and deepen the painful schism, Met. Timothy said.

Meanwhile, those who remain loyal to Christ and His Church amidst persecution are worthy of praise, he added.

“All of us who are Orthodox must pray earnestly to the Lord so that He would further strengthen the faithful in their saving feat,” he concluded.

Met. Timothy has spoken on the Ukrainian issue before October 2019, he told His Eminence Metropolitan Luke of Zaporozhye of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church that the hierarchs of the Jerusalem Patriarchate admire and are strengthened by the strong stance of the hierarchs of the canonical Ukrainian Church headed by His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine.

Met. Timothy was also present at the 2018 celebration of the Baptism of Rus’ in Kiev, where he emphasized that “His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry is valued and loved by the primates of all Orthodox Churches.” He was in Ukraine again in 2019, where he encouraged the faithful to remain faithful to God in His true Church.

David, unfortunately it's not just "a few" violent thugs. There are many. As for the non-violent, they are enabling the thugs by their silent consent. The others say nothing about it, do not try to stop the thugs. Besides, if we are talking about right or wrong: The OCU is not a canonical church, not blessed by God. Why do I say this do boldly? Because of its history of unordained hierarchs, but even besides that--by their fruits ye shall know them.

A few violent thugs does not reflect the entirety of the OCU. That is why I mentioned the regular OCU parishioners in Kyiv. They are not hurting anybody. What is their story? Nobody is asking that question. There is more here than meets the eye.

David: Take a look at what your OCU is doing: https://orthochristian.com/138041.html. These people are criminals and not Christians. Are you saying that what they do is excusable because of what the KGB did in its heyday? These people are the successors to the KGB.

David, are you for real? No one is forcing anyone into the OCU. It is obviously the other way around--the OCU is trying to force people in the majority, canonical church into the OCU. And the OCU does not number millions. Where did you get that? You are also unaware of Ukrainian history and think that it all started under communism. No, it goes back a long way. And brutal fascixt-style nationalism was never Christian. I am sure that His Eminence knows a lot more than you.

There are millions of Ukrainians in the OCU. Even using the most conservative estimates of their number, they are larger than the entirety of North American Orthodoxy (and then some). Are they all "violent"? That defies reason and credibility. There are deep historical and cultural reasons why Western Ukrainians (which is the home base of the OCU) want nothing to do with the Moscow Patriarchate. Everyone is focused on the conflicts in Eastern Ukraine, but what about the regular parishioners of OCU churches in Kyiv? Nobody talks about them. I'm sure they have their "stories" too. Maybe a grandma whose brother was turned into the KGB by his MP confessor for saying "anti-Soviet" things. Or a man from a former Greek Catholic family whose father was caught up in the Soviet liquidation of that group, with the MP taking the church he was baptized in. Does His Eminence understand how deep the wounds of the Soviet period (and before) go? How can Akrevia work here? That is something I have never heard articulated by people who take a hardline. There is enough pain to go around, on both sides. How can it be healed? I don't think forcing people to be part of the Moscow Patriarchate (or the OCU) is the way to go here.
