78-year-old Penelope was viciously attacked as she was opening Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in South Yarra, Melbourne, Australia, last week.
She lay alone for half an hour before she was found and then taken to the hospital with a broken wrist, fractured pelvis, and bleeding on the brain.
Greek City Times spoke with her son Evri Katsavos who responded to the worldwide outpouring of love and concern, saying: “It really shows how overwhelming the world is filled with beautiful people.”
He also told the outlet that they have started a GoFundMe to help with Penelope’s recovery.
The fundraiser has already far surpassed its humble $1,000 goal, but there will certainly be more costs associated with Penelope’s recovery, including purchasing equipment that is currently being loaned to her by the hospital.
Any extra beyond that the family intends to donate to charity.
“She is a devout Greek Orthodox woman and does not want to gain financially from what has happened to her,” the family writes, adding: “We would also like to encourage people, in lieu of donating, to be inspired by her devotion to her church and to volunteer and get involved at your parish if you are able to and support and learn from our older generation.”
