His Eminence Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol, 62, of the Cypriot Orthodox Church has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Met. Athanasios is known as a staunch defender of the Patristic Orthodox Tradition, and enjoys great spiritual authority both in Cyprus and throughout the entire Orthodox Church.

His Eminence tested positive on Tuesday during the standard, weekly tests performed at the diocese, the Metropolis of Limassol reports.

“Bishop Athanasios has already gone into self-isolation, while his close contacts, clergy and laity serving in the metropolis, have been informed and have been examined, with a negative result,” the Metropolis said.

It is also emphasized that sanitary protocols were always followed at the Metropolis.

His Eminence is asymptomatic and in good health.

I hope he is under 65 years old and has no other chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension or chronic pulmonary disease. These conditions increase the hospitalization rate of Covid-19 patients by 75% and increase mortality rate by 30%. My prayers t0 Metropolitan Athanasios for a quick recovery. May God watch over him.
