Jerusalem, April 16, 2021
For more than a millennium, the descent of the Holy Fire on Holy Saturday has been one of the most beloved services in the Orthodox Church. Every year, thousands of pilgrims from throughout the world pour into Jerusalem to experience the Divine miracle.
Unfortunately, last year, due to the COVID pandemic, the ceremony was held in an empty church, without the presence of parishioners of pilgrims.
This year, it is expected that a few thousand Orthodox faithful will be able to attend, according to the representative of the Romanian Patriarchate in Jerusalem.
Archimandrite Father Teofil Anăstăsoaie visited the Patriarchate of Jerusalem on Tuesday to discuss, among other things, administrative details regarding the services and ceremonies of Holy Week and Pascha. As Fr. Teofil told Ziarul Lumina, procedures are being finalized in consultations with the civil authorities, especially as concerns the services of the Holy Fire and Holy Pascha.
Restrictions are currently relaxed in Israel, corresponding to a significant decrease in the number of COVID patients. Therefore, Fr. Teofil said, it is expected that the services of Holy Week and Pascha will be celebrated in the presence of 2,000 to 2,500 believers.
However, to attend services, believers will have to prove that they have been vaccinated.
