After several months of lockdown, Holy Mt. Athos reopened to pilgrims, with restrictions, on Tuesday. Now other great monasteries of the Greek and Russian Orthodox Churches are reopening to the public as well.
Beginning Monday, May 17, the famous Meteora monasteries in Greece will begin accepting pilgrims, provided that all required sanitary measures are observed, reports the Orthodoxia News Agency.
In Russia, restrictions on entry to the territory of the Solovki Archipelago, including the Holy Transfiguration-Solovki Monastery, will be lifted beginning tomorrow, reports the Diocese of Arkhangelsk.
According to the authorities’ stipulations, anyone will be able to visit if they test negative for COVID or have been vaccinated.
The first entry restrictions to Solovki were introduced in April last year, and since then have been lifted, reintroduced, relaxed, or tightened in accordance with the epidemiological situation at any given time.
At Holy Transfiguration Monastery on Valaam Island, tourist season has begun, and they expect to restore the tourist flow to the level of 2019, before the pandemic, reports RIA-Novosti.
The monastery is usually visited by more than 100,000 pilgrims and tourists annually, while only about 56,000 were able to visit last year.
The monastery stopped receiving pilgrims in March 2020 until Karelian authorities allowed it to reopen on June 15, though overnight visits resumed only in August.
