The Serbian Orthodox Church is very concerned with maintaining good canonical order in the Church, and thus it will continue to support the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church headed by His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine, the Serian Patriarch said on Wednesday.

“And this will be a testament to the unity concluded between the Orthodox,” His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije said in a video address following his meeting with an official delegation from the UOC, headed by its chancellor His Eminence Metropolitan Anthony of Boryspil and Brovary.

The hierarchs discussed many problems that the Orthodox Church and the Orthodox world are facing today, “and we concluded that right now the world needs Christ—Crucified and Resurrected—more than ever, as He Who is Peace and without Whom there can be no peace,” the Serbian primate says. There can be no peace on earth until we reach peace with Christ, he emphasizes.

And it is immensely important to have unity in the Orthodox world, which requires the “preservation of the canonical order of the Church.”

As Pat. Porfirije recalls, the Serbian Church has expressed its concern about events in Ukraine both through its Council of Bishops and through its previous primate, His Holiness Patriarch Irinej. “We, the Orthodox Serbs, view the Orthodox Ukrainian people and all Orthodox as our brothers.”

However, without good canonical order, Orthodox brethren “cannot properly bear witness to our Lord and Savior,” Pat. Porfirije stresses.

“Therefore, it is very important for us that the canonical order that is in crisis in Ukraine today would be secured. The jurisdiction of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, headed by Metropolitan Onuphry, will be supported by our Church, and this will be a testament to the unity concluded between the Orthodox,” His Holiness promises.

The Patriarch also calls on all Orthodox Christians to receive all people as the image of God, and to bear witness to the Resurrection before all.

Yesterday, OrthoChristian reported the Patriarch’s recent statement that the Serbian Church “didn’t choose the ‘side’ of Moscow or Constantinople or anyone else, but always remained faithful to the canonical order and determined to respect this order and bear witness to it.”

The Canons of the Church are plain. I support Patriarch Porfirije and I stand with the Serbian Orthodox people. You can not compromise with secularism.
