The Diocese of Alaska of the Orthodox Church in America will hold a special assembly later this summer to nominate a candidate to become the ruling hierarch of the diocese.

The See has been vacant since His Eminence Archbishop David (Mahaffey) reposed in the Lord on November 28 following a short battle with aggressive renal cancer. He had served as Bishop of Alaska since 2014.

His Grace Bishop Alexis of Bethesda is currently acting as locum tenens of the diocese. In that capacity, the Holy Synod of the OCA requested that he convene a special Diocesan Assembly for the purpose of nominating a candidate to fill the vacant See of Sitka and Alaska, which His Grace did in an ukaz dated May 20.

As Bp. Alexis informs, His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon of Washington and All America and Canada will preside over the assembly to be held on August 7 at St. Innocent Cathedral in Anchorage.

The Holy Synod also elected Archimandrite Gerasim (Eliel) as bishop of Fort Worth at its latest session.
