The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church met at Danilov Monastery in Moscow yesterday under the chairmanship of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.

Among the many decisions made by the Synod, it was resolved to add two wonderworking icons to the official Russian Orthodox Church calendar, according to the Synodal report published on Patriarchia.ru.

Thus, on May 24/June 6, the Church will celebrate the revelation of the wonderworking Icon of the Savior Not Made by Hands that occurred in Yaroslavl in the 17th century.

The miraculous icon was revealed in 1612, during the formation of the second people’s militia in Yaroslavl under Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky. The city was suffering from a plague, which ceased after a citywide procession with the Icon of the Savior Not Made by Hands. Several obvious miracles also occurred during the procession itself. The icon was venerated for the next three centuries in Yaroslavl on May 24 in honor of its manifestation, and cases of miraculous healings were recorded. The icon was lost under the godless communists, but on March 13, 2018, it was discovered in the storerooms of the Yaroslavl Art Museum. An analysis confirmed its authenticity, and after two years of restoration work, the holy icon was transferred to the Christ the Savior-St. Athanasius Monastery on April 2 of this year.

And on October 8/21, the Church will celebrate the Tashla “Deliverer From Troubles” Icon of the Mother of God.

The icon appeared in the village of Tashla in the Samara Governorate on October 8/21, 1917, and a spring began to gush at the site of its appearance. Many people were healed of various ailments after praying before the holy icon. In the 1920s and 30s, the icon was preserved by the village faithful. Since 1947, it has been in the local Holy Trinity Church, where a convent was established in 2016. The wonderworking icon attracts pilgrims from all over Russia, and the monastery clergy have recorded several cases of miracles occurring after prayer before the icon.
