Vicovu de Jos, Romania, July 9, 2021
The first monument commemorating the anti-communist resistance in Bukovina was inaugurated in the Romanian commune of Vicovu de Jos yesterday.
Photo: basilica.ro The monument is located on the spot where Lt. Vladimir Macoveiciuc, the leader of the most important anti-communist resistance group in Bukovina, was shot by order of the Soviets, reports the Basilica News Agency.
Macoveiciuc was active in southern Bukovina, where he fought until 1946. After August 23, 1944, he remained underground with some people, organizing resistance in the mountains.
The memorial, made in the workshops at the famous Putna Monastery, was blessed by His Grace Bishop Damaschin of Dorneni. The event was attended by Abbot Melchisedec of Putna, Radu Ciuceanu, a survivor of the Pitești experiment and author of a study on the armed resistance in Bukovina, and local clergy and officials.
A memorial service for the fallen soldiers was also served, followed by military honors presented by two Honor Guard battalions. The event concluded with artistic program by Bukovina students and a memorial meal.
The memorial cross made at Putna Monastery is an identical copy of a 19th-century cross from the UNESCO monument church in Pătrăuți, Suceava County, founded by St. Stephen the Great. The fence posts represent the fighters under Macoveiciuc’s command and his family, who were victims of communist repressions.
