In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Metropolis of Morphou of the Cypriot Orthodox Church condemns the arrest of the renowned physician and epidemiologist Dr. Elpidophoros Sotiriadis.

The doctor, who holds a PhD in epidemiology and a PhD in environmental and occupational health from Harvard’s School of Public Health, was arrested after he gave a speech on July 18 at a rally against the government’s anti-coronavirus measures, the Metropolis notes.

After the rally outside the presidential palace, some of the protestors made their way to the Sigma TV station, throwing firecrackers at the building and burning some of the employee’s cars, reports france24.com.

Although Dr. Sotiriadis publicly condemned the violence on Sunday, he was taken to court with six others on Tuesday and charged with violating the law on infectious diseases, agitation to commit a criminal offense, unlawful assembly, conspiracy to commit a misdemeanor, conspiracy to commit a felony, and creating a nuisance, reports in.gr.

Dr. Sotiriadis is highly qualified and has helped hundreds on a not-for-profit basis during the COVID pandemic, the Metropolis emphasizes. And in.gr notes that according to the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cyprus of June 18, the doctor was appointed as a member of the state’s Medical Council. He is also a member of the Council of Ministers’ Food Council until 2023.

“We thank him in particular for the free medical treatment offered to many faithful of the Metropolis of Morphou, as well as other spiritual children,” the Metropolis emphasizes.

And while successfully treating patients, Dr. Sotiriadis has also publicly testified, “boldly and with studied documentation,” that there are other treatments available without the serious side effects of the mainstream treatments, according to the statement.

Thus, “the speedy release of Mr. Elpidophoros is a request first of all of the sick and then of his family and friends,” the Metropolis states.

The statement concludes:

For all this, we unite our prayer with the prayers of all those who have known the doctor and the man Elpidophoros, while at the same time we send a message of support to him and his family, asking our Lord Jesus Christ to strengthen them with faith and the patience of the holy martyrs and confessors of our Church. And we are sure that this test will soon pass and the Truth will shine, which the doctor Elpidophoros fearlessly proclaims, as a child of Light and Truth, as a worthy child of the Truth of the Triune God.
