A church dedicated to one of the greatest saints of the 20th century and one of the most beloved saints of America is set to be built in the Ukrainian capital.

spzh.news spzh.news On Sunday, September 12, in the Goloseevo District of Kiev, clerics of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church celebrated the rite of the blessing of the cross at future construction site of the Church of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco, parishioners reported to the Union of Orthodox Journalists.

After the blessing of the cross, the gathered priests and faithful prayed the Akathist to St. John.

The rector of the community, Fr. Nikita Chekman, noted that this will be the first church named for St. John in Kiev. “It’s a great honor to have the intercession and patronage of such a great saint, our contemporary,” he said.

St. John was born in the village of Adamovka, Ukraine, where there is a skete dedicated to him. A monument to the holy hierarch was opened and blessed at the skete on his feast day this year, July 2.

Today it is especially appropriate to remember that St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco, the wonderworker, is our contemporary, having reposed only a little over half a century ago, in 1966—that is, quite recently.

The chief characteristic we can point out in St. John's theological writings is freedom. He is entirely immersed in the Orthodox Tradition, and he is himself a source of true Orthodox theology. He has no kind of foreign influences or any overemphasis on one part of Tradition because of some controversy. This makes him especially valuable as an authority on something which is very much discussed today in the English language: the so-called Western influence on Orthodox theology in the last seven hundred years.
