A monk of the Holy Dormition Monastery in Novomoskovsk, Russia, was hospitalized with stab wounds yesterday.

Hierodeacon Nektary (Monakhov) was attacked after reading the Psalter for the Dead in the monastery’s Holy Dormition Church, the monastery reports.

Hearing a man calling out, he opened the monastery gates to him to find out what kind of trouble had brought the man to the monastery at such a late hour—around midnight.

The man suddenly pulled out a knife and stabbed Fr. Nektary several times in the face, throat, and chest. He then stabbed him several more times even after Fr. Nektary fell to the ground, and then fled the scene of the crime.

Thankfully, the attacker didn’t hit any internal organs, though Fr. Nektary did lose consciousness from significant blood loss.

The scene was caught on surveillance cameras, and the police were able to establish the identity of the attacker—a 22-year-old local man, according to the Regional Ministry of Internal Affairs, and detain him.

The monastery reports that Fr. Nektary’s life is not in danger and he plans to return to his monastic obediences as soon as possible.

When you say “local man” do you mean “Muslim man”?
