A new foundation, named in honor of the primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, aimed at encouraging research in the field of Biblical Studies was established and announced at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in Yonkers, New York, last week.

Seminary dean Archpriest Chad Hatfield made the relevant decision on Thursday, November 11, at the opening of the Searching the Scriptures conference held with the participation of His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, the Chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, who arrived in the U.S. earlier last week.

Fr. Chad explained why the foundation is named for Pat. Kirill: “It was a unanimous decision of the Seminary Board of Trustees to confer the name of the primate of the Russian Orthodox Church upon this foundation, thus expressing support for His Holiness as a principled and consistent defender of the canonicity of the Church structure in the context of the crisis in world Orthodoxy.”

The funds raised for the foundation will significantly expand the seminary’s possibilities in the field of Biblical Studies, in particular through offering scholarships to students working in this area. Additionally, the position of professor of Biblical Studies will also be created at the seminary.

Another foundation named for an Orthodox primate was founded in America back in April. The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Foundation is dedicated to raising money to send to the Patriarchate in Turkey.
