A joyous event in the life of the Polish Orthodox Church took place last week, when the Ministry of the Interior signed an agreement to return a 19-century church building to the Church’s Diocese of Lublin and Chełm.

The church in Dęblin, in eastern Poland, is located on the territory of the military barracks at the so-called Dęblin Fortress. The church was built in 1886 and formerly served as a hospital church. For the past several decades it has served as a military warehouse, reports the Diocese of Lublin and Chełm.

His Eminence Archbishop Paisjusz of Przemyśl and Gorlice, who co-chaired the commission working on the church’s return, emphasized that the return of another house of God to the Church is an historic and important event for the Orthodox Church in Poland.

For his part, His Eminence Archbishop Abel of Lublin and Chełm emphasized that this is only the beginning of the restoration of liturgical life in Dęblin. The Diocese now has to work on obtaining funds for the renovation of the church and its restoration to its original splendor.
