Majority of Russians deem jokes about the Church inappropriate

An overwhelming majority of Russians deem it inappropriate to make jokes about the Church, according to a new poll from the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion.

While 85% of Russians enjoy believe they have a good sense of humor and enjoy jokes and comedic shows, they also believe there are a number of topics that should be off-limit, the Center reports, drawing on its recent survey.

In particular, 80% of respondents believe it’s inappropriate to joke about the Church.

Russians also largely deem it inappropriate to joke about people’s health, the national characteristics and traditions of other peoples, and the history of Russia.

More than three-quarters of Russians also have a negative attitude towards dark humor, about death, violence, diseases, and other dark topics.

The survey involved 1,600 Russians aged 18 and over. The margin of error is 2.5% or less.

There are also laws in Russia against public acts that offend religious sensibilities and insult religious institutions. There have been several cases lately of people being arrested and/or fined for publishing inappropriate photos taken against the background of Russian Orthodox churches.

“The majority of our youth—63 percent—are believers,” commented the head of the Дepartment for External Church Relations, His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, citing a VTSIOM survey, according to which only 37% of young Russians aged 18-24 consider themselves unbelievers.

God bless the Russian People... Jokes about the Holy Orthodox Church are blasphemous, plain and simple, and is the work of the no good liberals.... if this becomes common practice in Holy Russia, then it will lead to other more blasphemous comments and jokes which I dare not reference to... if you FEAR GOD you would never make a joke about the Church... Look to the United States as an example, where these no good rotten liberals make jokes about Almighty God Himself... The joke will be on them, when they face the Almighty Judgement Seat of Jesus Christ, and I hope our God of Vengeance and Punishment has no mercy on their souls... Do not give in one inch to the no good liberals... Just my opinion
