Serbian Bishop Luka of Western Europe reposes in the Lord

On Friday, December 17, His Grace Bishop Luka (Kovačević) of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Western Europe reposed in the Lord at the age of 71 following a long illness, reports the Serbian Orthodox Church.

He served 45 years in ordained ministry, including 29 years as a hierarch.

His Grace was born on October 30, 1950, in Piskavica near Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He graduated from the seminary at Krka Monastery in 1972, and from the St. Serge Institute in Paris in 1982.

He was tonsured a monk on June 26, 1976, and was ordained a hieromonk that same year. From 1982 to 1992, he labored at the Monastery of St. Sava in Elaine, Australia.

He was consecrated Bishop of Australia and New Zealand on August 17, 1992. In 1997, he was elected Bishop of Western Europe, while remaining administrator of the Diocese of Australia and New Zealand until 1999.
