Kazakhstani police have detained a suspect in the vandalism of an Orthodox cemetery in the Alma-Ata Province that left more than a dozen crosses broken.

It was reported over the weekend that police in the city of Ushtobe were investigating the vandalism, that also damaged fences and several monuments themselves.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called upon the Minister of Internal Affairs to do everything possible to identify the responsible parties.

“Minister of Internal Affairs Erlan Turgumbayev has been instructed to track down the vandals who desecrated the Christian Orthodox cemetery in Ushtobe (Alma-Ata Province) in order to hold them accountable under the law,” Pres. Tokayev tweeted on Saturday, reports TASS.

According to an Interfax-Religion report yesterday, police have detained a 34-year-old local who suffers from mental disorders. His involvement in the crime is confirmed by witness testimony and the police investigation, the Ministry of Internal Affairs stated.

It was established that the desecration of the graves took place on January 16. According to police, 14 burial sites were damaged and destroyed, where metal fences were torn out, wooden and iron crosses were broken, and grave inscriptions and memorial wreaths were scattered about.

Given the suspect’s mental state, he was hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital.
