“A new cafe in Carbondale features coffee, doughnuts, and maybe a little bit of [H]eaven,” reports WNEP16 News in northeastern Pennsylvania.

“We took an eyesore and we made it into a beautiful building. A thriving business,” said Cliff Krajkovich, owner of the newly opened Burning Bush Cafe.

And the shop doesn’t use just any beans, but exclusively those roasted by the monks of St. Tikhon’s Monastery in nearby Waymart.

“We have a very high-end coffee. It’s a micro lot custom coffee and we want to try to bring that high quality to the community,” said Abbot Sergius (Bowyer).

St. Tikhon’s Monastery is the oldest Orthodox monastery in America, founded by the future Patriarch St. Tikhon in 1905. For nearly 120 years, the monastery has been a place of prayer and pilgrimage, where the Divine Liturgy is celebrated daily.

The monastery also provides the English-speaking world with important Orthodox texts through its own press, and parishes with hand-dipped beeswax candles, and a few years ago, the brotherhood decided to expand into the coffee business.

Burning Bush Coffee Roasters was launched in January 2016, operating in the bookstore on the grounds of the monastery. And now the monastery is offering its top-notch roasts in the local community.

“I’ve lived here for 20 years, this is my home, this is where I live, this is where I work and I want to make it a better place for everyone,” said Fr. Sergius.
