A new bishop was consecrated yesterday for the Metropolis of Kananga (Democratic Republic of Congo) of the Alexandrian Patriarchate.
The consecration of Archimandrite Chariton (Mousoungayi) was celebrated by Patriarch Theodoros and several other Alexandrian hierarchs at the Patriarchal Cathedral of St. Nicholas of Cairo. The service was also attended by Archbishop Damianos of Sinai and the Greek ambassador to Greece, reports Romfea.
Metropolitan Chariton is one of six archimandrites who were elected to the episcopacy by the Alexandrian Holy Synod at its session January 10-12.
He was born in Kananga in 1974, and was the spiritual child of the missionary Metropolitan Ignatius of Pentapolis. He studied theology in both Thessaloniki and Athens, with a scholarship from the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served as a missionary in Kananga and then as Patriarchal Commissioner in the Congo.
In his ordination speech, he expressed his heartfelt thanks to God that he grew up in the Orthodox faith from infancy and that he now has the chance to serve as a hierarch in his homeland of Kananga.
He also thanked Pat. Theodoros for entrusting him with this ministry, and assured him of his devotion to the Patriarchate of Alexandria.
He also referred with regret to the Russian Church entering Alexandrian territory, emphasizing that it didn’t respect the sacrifice of so many missionaries who came before it and gave their lives to evangelize Africa. “He promised that he would never become a second Judas Iscariot,” Romfea reports.
Bp. Chariton then gave thanks to all those who have played a role in his spiritual life, and asked forgiveness from anyone he may have offended.
