Mother Georgia (Schukina), Honorary Abbess of Gorny Convent in Jerusalem, reposed in the Lord yesterday after several decades of ministry in the Holy Land, reports the Russian Synodal Department for Monasteries and Monasticism.
His Holiness Patriarch Kirill offered his condolences to the abbess and sisters of the monastery, recalling the main events of her life.
Mother Georgia was born in Leningrad in 1931, where as a young girl she survived the blockade, sorrows, and hardships of wartime and the loss of her parents.
In 1949, she entered the Holy Dormition Pukhtitsa Convent, where she fulfilled the obediences of treasurer and choir director. From 1955 to 1968 she was a nun of the Vilnius Monastery in Lithuania.She received the monastic tonsure on April 7, 1968 in Pukhtitsa, where she labored until 1989, when she was sent to help with the reconstruction of the St. John of Rila Monastery in St. Petersburg.
In 1991, she was elevated to the rank of Igumenia, and the following year she was sent to Jerusalem to serve as abbess of the Gorny Convent. Under her leadership, the churches were developed and beautified.
In recent years, Mother Georgia served as Honorary Abbess, not directly managing the monastery.
