A hierarch of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church who was injured during shelling at a Donetsk monastery underwent surgery yesterday.

Photo: Facebook Photo: Facebook His Grace Bishop Ambrose of Volovakha, vicar of the Donetsk Diocese, was injured in the left arm during an attack on the Monastery of St. Basil and the Convent of St. Nicholas in the village of Nikolskoye, the diocese reports.

The monastics themselves reported that the monasteries were liberated by the Russian army earlier this month, on the feast of the Triumph of Orthodoxy. The Monasteries of St. Basil and St. Nicholas are a focal point in the current conflict, as they continue to follow the traditions of their found Elder Zosima (Sokur, †2002), who was strongly in favor of Russian-Ukrainian spiritual unity.

The monastery has been attacked several times since then, and the holy cell where Elder Zosima lived was destroyed.

Vladyka Ambrose was evacuated to Donetsk, where he underwent an emergency surgery. He is stable condition, the diocese reports.
