The Romanian Orthodox Church is teaming up with the National Agency Against Human Trafficking to raise awareness of this serious problem and educate people on how to avoid risk situations.

The Patriarchate and Agency earlier signed a protocol in December 2020 providing for the development of joint actions to prevent human trafficking at the local, regional, and national levels.

The Church issued a press release yesterday about the new initiative:

Romania’s National Agency Against Human Trafficking and the Romanian Orthodox Church are currently implementing a national campaign entitled “United, we offer freedom! Exploitation oppresses souls and destroys destinies.”

The main message of the campaign is a warning about the phenomenon of human trafficking, addressed both to the believers in the parishes of the Romanian Orthodox Church and to the general public. The campaign also aims to convey a strong call for action and civic involvement.

The campaign aims to prevent human trafficking in its main forms of manifestation by raising awareness and improving the level of information of the population about this phenomenon, addressing both dimensions of trafficking, namely supply and demand that facilitate exploitation and human trafficking.

Background information:

Romania’s National Agency Against Human Trafficking evaluates and monitors, at a national level, the activity carried out in the field of the fight against trafficking in human beings, fulfilling the role of a national rapporteur.

UNICEF: Children fleeing war in Ukraine are at heightened risk of human trafficking and exploitation. Traffickers often seek to exploit the chaos of largescale population movements, and with more than 1.5 million children having fled Ukraine as refugees since 24 February. Separated children are especially vulnerable to trafficking and exploitation. Afshan Khan, UNICEF’s Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia: “Displaced children are extremely vulnerable to being separated from their families, exploited, and trafficked. More than 500 unaccompanied children were identified crossing from Ukraine into Romania from 24 February to 17 March. The true number of separated children who have fled Ukraine to neighbouring countries is likely much higher. https://www.unicef.org/press-releases/children-fleeing-war-ukraine-heightened-risk-trafficking-and-exploitation

President Trump’s U.S. State Department said that Belarus and Russia were among the worst offenders of human trafficking and forced labor. The State Department’s 2018 Trafficking in Persons Report evaluated 187 countries and territories and ranked them into four tiers (Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 2 Watch List, and Tier 3), with Tier 1 being the best and Tier 3 the worst. Russia, Belarus, Iran, and Turkmenistan were among 22 countries ranked as Tier 3.
