With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, a procession with the relics of St. Sergius of Radonezh has begun in Russia, timed to the 600th anniversary of the relic’s uncovering, the patriarchal press service reported yesterday.
The path of the reliquary began from the Holy Trinity-Sergius Lavra last Sunday, when the Orthodox Church celebrated the Day of the Holy Trinity.
According to the planned route, the reliquary will visit at least 50 dioceses, staying two days in each. The total length of the route will be about 30 thousand kilometers.
The procession with the relics will be divided into three stages. The first stage began the on June 13, in Yekaterinburg and will end in Vologda, the second will begin on July 19 in Yaroslavl and will end on August 29 in Sevastopol, and the third stage will begin on August 30 in Rostov-on-Don and will end on October 6 in Balashikha near Moscow.
The relics of St. Sergius, “abbot of the Russian land”, will visit cities across the length and breadth of Russia, from St. Petersburg to Kamchatka and the Far East, as well as to cities in the North Caucasus region.
