The “Mercy” Service under the auspices of the Russian Orthodox Church has launched its “Charity on the Run” campaign, in which anyone can help raise funds to help seriously ill children and adults, as well as people in need. The campaign will end on the day of the largest Russian running competition—the Moscow Marathon. This year it will be held on September 18, reports Patriarchia.ru.
“All our runners are united by one goal: to do a good deed and lend a helping hand to those who need it. We are sure that there are no borders for mercy, and anyone can join our campaign. It doesn't matter where you live, what your physical fitness is, or how far you can run. Register and run for those who can't run, anywhere in the world, any distance available to you,” said Ekaterina Metleva, organizer of Mercy on the Run.
To become a participant of the campaign, you need to create a profile on a the “Mercy on the Run” website, share it on social networks or messengers and ask friends to support the fundraising campaign. You can also take part in the campaign by making a donation through the profile of any runner.
The collected funds will help to cover the costs of projects of the Mercy service to help those under its care. For example, one day in Moscow’s “Elizabethan Garden” rehabilitation center for children with cerebral palsy costs 1,350 rubles ($25), one hour of care for the elderly in the St. Spiridon nursing home costs 350 rubles ($6.40), and one day’s rent of the homeless rehabilitation center “Hanger of Salvation” costs 3,235 rubles ($70).
The tradition of running for charity came to Russia from America and Europe. Charitable organizations have been running their own races for many years and creating teams within the framework of major sporting events. The Mercy on the Run team has been the largest charity team at the Moscow Marathon for several years in a row.
