Large procession accompanies Greece’s beloved Panagia of Tinos Icon

Tinos, Cyclades, Greece, July 26, 2022

Several hierarchs and thousands of clerics, monastics, and Orthodox faithful joined in the annual procession with the Panagia of Tinos Icon, the national patron of Greece, over the weekend.

The procession from the 19th-century Holy Church of Evangelistria of Tinos to the Kechrovouniou Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos was led by His Eminence Metropolitan Nektarios of Corfu, with Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Halki, Bishop Barnabas of Neapolis, Bishop Hierotheos of Zichni, and the local hierarch Bishop Dorotheos of Tinos, reports Romfea.

At the gates of the monastery, the icon was passed to the abbess of the holy habitation and placed in an ornate marble shrine next to the precious skull of St. Pelagia of Tinos, an elderly nun of the monastery who was led to discover the lost icon in 1822 following a series of visitations from the Most Holy Theotokos herself. The procession is held annually on her feast.

Led by Met. Chrysostomos, the hierarchs then celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the monastery. In his homily, the hierarch urged the faithful to never hesitate to seek the intercessions of the Panagia.

The Liturgy was followed by a traditional monastic reception.

The next day, the hierarchs again concelebrated back at the Evangelistria Church, together with Metropolitan Narkissos of Pelusium of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, who had arrived to venerate the icon.
