Daria Dugin, the daughter of the famous Russian philosopher and public figure Alexander Dugin, died on Saturday evening when the car she was driving suddenly blew up outside of Moscow.
Investigators believe it was an assassination attempt meant for her father, whose car she was driving. Her father was in the car behind her and had to witness the murder of his daughter.
His Holiness Patriarch Kirill offered his condolences to Alexander, saying: “I received the news of your daughter’s tragic death with deep sorrow.”
The Patriarch notes that Daria was an active public figure in her own right, as a journalist and talented researcher. “She managed to achieve significant success in her chosen field, to earn the appreciation and respect of colleagues,” the Russian primate writes.
“May the Merciful Lord of Heaven and earth grant rest to the soul of His newly-departed handmaiden Daria in the mansions of the righteous and make her memory to be eternal,” His Holiness concludes.
Journalist and presenter on the Orthodox TV channel Spas Andrei Afanasiev wrote about Daria that she was a very competent and confident person, who was “distinguished by the purity of her speech.”
“I never heard a bad word about her from anyone… I’m sure that her pure soul is already with God,” writes Afanasiev.
Daria was in the same vein philosophically and politically as her father, who is known as one of the ideological leaders of Eurasianism and the “Russian World” political concept. He is also a vocal proponent of the war in Ukraine, as was she.
In 2014, he was added to the Mirotvorets (“Peacemaker”) site—a project curated by the Ukrainian government compiling information on those considered to be enemies of Ukraine. Dugin is listed there as a “Russian fascist” and “Anti-Ukrainian propagandist.” The site is known to have published the personal information of its enemies, and some of those people have been known to wind up dead.
Among those deemed enemies of Ukraine are His Holiness Patriarch Irinej of Serbia (+2020), His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine, His Eminence Metropolitan Luke of Zaporozhye, and many other figures of Orthodox Church both in Ukraine and abroad.
While many in Russia are pointing the figure at Ukraine for Daria Dugin’s murder, the Ukrainian government has denied any involvement, saying Ukraine is neither a criminal nor terrorist state.
According to political analyst Sergei Markov, Alexander himself is in the hospital as well, and in need of prayer.
