Nea Makri, Greece, September 8, 2022
Gerontissa Theodosia, the former abbess of the Monastery of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos, commonly known as the Monastery of St. Ephraim, in Nea Makri, Greece, reposed in the Lord today, on the feast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, at the age of 103.
According to the Greek Archdiocese of Australia’s Vema newspaper, the departure of her soul was accompanied by signs from God:
It was witnessed that at the time of the ascent of her soul to the heavenly kingdom, a bright light flashed at that very moment, filling the whole monastery with bright light which was also full of stars, floating up to heaven.
Gerontissa Theodosia was known as a “beacon of love and humility to all who came to know her,” the newspaper reports.
She was the second abbess of the monastery after its refounding by the Blessed Gerontissa Makaria who discovered the relics of St. Ephraim of Nea Makri in 1950, after which the holy habitation became one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in Attica.
Mother Theodosia stepped down in March 2020, and Gerontissa Makaria II was enthroned as the new abbess.
