St. Elisabeth Convent in Minsk is known throughout the world not only for its beautiful churches and choir and the high-quality icons and vestments it produces, but also for its wide-ranging outreach to all who are in need.
The monastery has chapels and sketes with various spiritual and humanitarian missions throughout the capital city and the whole of Belarus, and on Monday, the eve of the feast of the Exaltation of the Life-Giving Cross, two of its churches at these mission points were solemnly consecrated.
The sisters of the monastery have been ministering to the children of a local psycho-neurological long-term care center for many years, and this week, His Eminence Metropolitan Benjamin of Minsk and All Belarus consecrated the convent’s small wooden church in honor of St. Nektarios of Aegina—a great wonderworker who is known for helping those suffering from cancer and other illnesses, the monastery reports.
The children of the care center have been praying an akathist to St. Nektarios with the nuns weekly since 2002, and in 2010, the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the church. Since then, the akathist has been read on Fridays and the Divine Liturgy celebrated on Saturdays.
The convent also has a chapel in the dormitory of the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics that was consecrated on Monday.
The rite of consecration for the Chapel of the Unexpected Joy Icon of the Mother of God was celebrated by the monastery cleric Fr. Sergei Falei, who has been pastoring university students for years.
The monastery has been working with the university for years, holding meetings and conversations with students, which will now take place in the chapel rather than in a classroom, and students and teachers regularly visit the monastery. St. Elisabeth’s also operates a church shop at the university.
