Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria met with President Joe Biden at the White House yesterday, accompanied by Archbishop Elpidophoros of the Patriarchate of Constantinople’s Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
The Patriarch told the President that he “came to the United States with the love of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew,” and presented him with the Grand Cross of the Apostle Mark—the highest honor of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, reports the Orthodoxia News Agency.
He also spoke of the U.S. President as a man of faith.
The Alexandrian primate is visiting America for the first time. On Saturday, he was granted the Athenagoras Human Rights Award by the Archons of the Patriarchate of Constantinople for standing with Patriarch Bartholomew against the Russian Church on the matter of the Ukrainian schismatics.
His meeting with the President lasted about half an hour, during which Biden showed strong interest in the work of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, as well as the current battle with the Moscow Patriarchate, which created an African Exarchate in December and has been actively receiving clergy and parishes throughout Africa.
They also discussed the war in Ukraine, Greek-American relations, and religious freedom.
Before the meeting with Pres. Biden, Pat. Theodoros also met with other White House officials, and afterwards he visited the State Department.
