The wonderworking Surdegis Icon of the Mother of God was brought to Vilnius for the first time in 20 years for a large procession with the faithful on Saturday.
Believers from all over Lithuania gathered in the capital to greet the icon, which was brought from the city of Kauņas to the Holy Dormition Cathedral in Vilnius, where the Divine Liturgy was celebrated, with a moleben during which the faithful prayed for an end to the war in Ukraine, reports the Church of Lithuania.
Then all present processed with the wonderworking icon to the Holy Spirit Monastery in Vilnius, where the icon will remain until Saturday. This is the Lithuanian Church’s second such procession for peace in Ukraine, the first having been held in late April.
The Surdegis Icon first appeared on the feast of the Dormition in 1530, at a spring near the church in the town of Surdegis. The icon is currently housed in the Annunciation Cathedral in Kauņas, and continues to work miracles to this day.
