The wonderworking Panagia Sumela Icon is currently visiting the Church of St. Demetrios the Myrrh-Gusher in Athens.

The sacred treasure, painted by the hand of St. Luke the Evangelist, was brought from the monastery of the same name in Vermio on Tuesday and will remain in the church until October 28. The icon was greeted by Bishop Chrysostomos of Euripus, Metropolitan Panteleimon of Veria, and others, reports Romfea.

The hierarchs then celebrated Great Vespers together with local clergy.

“Great blessings and grace accompany the holy Icon of Panagia Sumela, which we transferred today from her holy abode,” Met. Panteleimon said.

“We all need the blessing and grace of the Panagia in this difficult time in which we live and with the dangers we face as individuals, but also as humanity and as a nation—dangers and temptations for which we should beg the loving Mother of our Lord … so that with Her help and the intercession of the Holy Great Martyr Demetrios, we may be rid of all visible and invisible enemies.”

According to the Orthodoxia News Agency, thousands of Orthodox faithful have come to venerate the wonderworking icon.
