According to a new study from the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CEDEM), the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro has grown considerably in both size and influence since Montenegro became an independent state in 2006.

Analyzing key social and political trends in the country over the past 16 years, the CEDEM shows that the number of citizens who identify as parishioners of the Serbian Orthodox Church has increased by about 10%.

Meanwhile, the number of those who identify with the schismatic “Montenegrin Orthodox Church” has decreased over the same period.

“The data simply shows that among the Orthodox body, the percentage of those who say they belong to the SOC has increased by 20% … while the percentage of those who say they belong to the MOC has decreased. In other words, the SOC has gained strength over time,” the report reads.

As of June 2022, the Serbian Orthodox Church represents 61.8% of the Montenegrin population, and the MOC—6.7%.

The proportion of citizens belonging to Islam (18.7%) and Catholicism (4.3%) has remained stable.
