Georgia: More than 950 children baptized as Godchildren of beloved Patriarch Ilia

Another mass Baptism was held in Tbilisi yesterday, with more than 950 children becoming new Godchildren of His Holiness Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II.

The Patriarch has been guiding the Church for more than 40 years and is the most trusted man in the entire nation. In an effort to improve Georgia’s dire post-Soviet demographic situation, the Church began holding mass Baptisms in January 2008, with the beloved primate personally becoming Godfather to the third and subsequent children of spouses who were married in the Church.

The service celebrated at Holy Trinity Cathedral yesterday is the 66th such mass Baptism service, with another 965 infants becoming Godchildren to the Patriarch this time around, reports the Georgian Patriarchate’s press service.

Pat. Ilia is now Godfather to more than 45,000 Georgian children.

The previous mass Baptism was held on June 20 this year.

The traditional mass procession was reduced to a convoy of priests the past two years due to the COVID pandemic, but the faithful made a strong showing again this year.
