On Tuesday, January 10, the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople canonized two new saints: Elder Gerasimos (Mikragiannanitis) and Ecumenical Patriarch Jeremiah I, reports Mystagogy.

Elder Gerasimos (+1991) is known as a great modern hymnographer of the Church, having composed more than 2,000 services.

His feast is to be celebrated on December 7.

Ecumenical Patriarch Jeremiah I (+1546) served as Patriarch from 1522 to 1524 and again from 1525 to 1546. During his reign, the Stavronikita Cell was elevated to the rank of monastery, becoming the twentieth ruling monastery on Mt. Athos. He also managed to save many churches that were threatened wth demolition by the Turks.

His feast is to be celebrated on January 13.

See Mystagogy for a fuller biography of both new saints.
