January 27 marked the 10th anniversary of the enthronement of His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon of Washington and All America and Canada as the primate of the autocephalous Orthodox Church in America.

To commemorate the event, His Beatitude celebrated the Divine Liturgy on Saturday, January 21, at St. Nicholas Cathedral in Washington, D.C. together with various clergy from the OCA administration and local archdiocesan clergy, the OCA reports.

Before the Liturgy, Met. Tikhon ordained a reader to the subdiaconate. Following the service, a lunch was held in the Metropolitan’s honor.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of his election as primate, Met. Tikhon and the Holy Synod of the OCA celebrated the Divine Liturgy at St. Tikhon’s Monastery in South Canaan, Pennsylvania, on November 13.

In addition to his primatial duties, Met. Tikhon is also the bishop for the Archdiocese of Washington, and he directly oversees the various stavropegial institutions of the OCA.

“Throughout his tenure, Metropolitan Tikhon has been a dedicated servant of the Church and has worked diligently to promote the Orthodox faith and strengthen the Church’s presence in North America. The Orthodox Church in America extends its gratitude to His Beatitude for his archpastoral leadership and care. May God grant His Beatitude many years!”

The Russian Church was the first Orthodox Church to be established in America, when Alaska was part of Russia. I am not afraid to say that if the Ecumenical Patriarchate of that time had opposed Russian jurisdiction over Alaska, it would have taken action on the matter.

CS: This is not a question of geographical jurisdiction, but of a Mother Church granting autocephaly to its daughter Church. Most of the other Churches do in fact recognize the autocephaly of the OCA. I repeat, it is completely independent now from the Moscow Patriarchate. I have not dodged your original question, I have answered it, but you don't seem satisfied with the answer. I would suggest you read up on the subject, if you are not satisfied with what you have found here. You sound a little confused. A complete church history is not something that can be covered in a comment.

What Ecumenical Council or Pan-Orthodox Synod gave the Moscow Patriarchate jurisdiction over North America? Isn’t autocephaly supposed to be granted by all Orthodox Churches? And you’ve dodged my original question. Of course all Orthodox Churches recognize the canonicity of the OCA, but most do not recognize the “autocephaly.” I would suggest you reread your own publications…

CS: The OCA was granted autocephaly in a canonical way: from its mother Church. It is completely separate from the Moscow Patriarchate, though it has friendly relations with it. It is recognized by all Churches except the CP, because the CP believes that only it has the right to grant autocephaly, which is an uncanonical idea. The OCU, on the other hand, is made up of schismatic bishops, some of whom where never even canonically ordained or consecrated, by a Church that has no canonical right to act in another Church's jurisdiction. The majority of Churches do not recognize it, nor is it entirely autonomous from the CP. Many articles have been published on our website explaining this. We would suggest you read them if you really want to know the answer to your question.

Editors: Why do you claim the OCA is “autocephalous” when the majority of Orthodox Churches only recognize it as an autonomous branch of the Russian Orthodox Church? You categorize the OCU as “schismatic” since it isn’t in communion with most churches, so why categorize the OCA as “autocephalous”?
