Syria, February 7, 2023
Two devastating earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria yesterday, killing and injuring thousands, and destroying hundreds of buildings, including a number of Orthodox churches.
Condolences to Patriarchs Bartholomew of Constantinople and John X of Antioch have poured in from around the Orthodox world. Pat. John appealed to the Metropolitans of the Antiochian Patriarchate to pray for the repose of the souls of those who died and for the comfort of those who are suffering.
He also called on the hierarchs to take the necessary measures to help those suffering in their respective dioceses.
A team from the Patriarchate’s Department of Ecumenical Relations and Development conducted a rapid assessment to begin providing emergency relief to afflicted families, and the team is distributing food kits, winter necessities, mattresses, and blankets, and is working to secure a safe haven for those who lost their homes.
Parishes of the Antiochian Archdiocese in North America will take up collections for the affected people, cities, parishes and archdioceses throughout February.
The Antiochian Metropolis of Germany and Central Europe is also accepting donations to the following bank account:
