Holy Transfiguration-Valaam Monastery celebrated the 30th anniversary of the abbacy of His Grace Bishop Pankraty of Troitsk last month.

Bp. Pankraty celebrated the occasion with a moleben of thanksgiving after the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, February 12, the monastery reports.

On behalf of the entire brotherhood, Hieromonk David, the head of the monastery’s Smolensk Skete, presented Bp. Pankraty with a new episcopal mantia with icons of Sts. Sergius and Herman of Valaam. A festive meal was then held.

“Our holy monastery, through your vigilant care, has been reborn like a phoenix from the ashes and has blossomed like a lily,” the brothers said in their address to their abbot. “The Divine fire of true asceticism has been breathed into its inner life and its most holy name has been glorified to the end of the earth.”

The brethren also recalled how Bp. Pankraty had hoped to live in asceticism on Mt. Athos, but under obedience to His Holiness Patriarch Alexei II, he obediently went instead to the “Northern Athos.”
