Pochaev, Ternopil Province, Ukraine, May 2, 2023
Nearly 500 years ago, St. Job of Pochaev, the great saint of the Holy Dormition-Pochaev Lavra, planted a number of linden trees along a road outside the monastery.
During Holy Week, the last surviving tree was suddenly uprooted.
“The history of our Church and our country is disappearing before our very eyes,” writes the Diocese of Chernivtsi and Bukovina of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
“Everyone who has ever gone to Pochaev and walked to the monastery cemetery remembers this linden tree, and now there are no linden trees, no icons, no memory…” the diocese writes.
The statement doesn’t specify who destroyed the tree that had remained since the times of St. Job of Pochaev, though withered.
A local resident, Anatoly Galanets, had turned the tree into a chapel.
