The local hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church carried a wonderworking icon of the Mother of God to the banks of the Dnieper River in Kherson yesterday to pray for all those who are in danger of flooding after an explosion at the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station.

According to a long tradition, the wonderworking Kasperskaya Icon of the Mother of God was brought to Kherson from Odessa for the patronal feast of the Holy Spirit Cathedral on Monday.

And yesterday, after the Divine Liturgy, His Eminence Metropolitan John of Kherson served an Akathist before the miraculous image.

After leaving the cathedral, the Kasperskaya Icon was taken to the banks of the Dnieper where Met. John prayed to the Mother of God for Kherson and the settlements throughout the province that are now in a flood zone as a result of the breach in the dam at the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. Ukrainian forces had been firing HIMARS and other missiles at the dam for months, and this reportedly undermined the contruction, which dates to the 1950s.

Thousands have already been evacuated from the area, and reports says more than 1,000 homes are underwater.

The authorities’ disregard for the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, “which culminated in a low-grade show with an air raid alarm,” is a spit upon both the hierarchs and the millions of Orthodox faithful. It’s also a spit upon peace and stability, the hierarch writes.
