The Ukrainian authorities are sadly ignorant of the spiritual laws that govern the universe. Instead, they spit upon the Church and the saints, says His Eminence Metropolitan Luke of Zaporozhye.
The Metropolitan was among the UOC hierarchs who tried to see President Zelensky on Monday in order to personally hand him the Synod’s appeal in connection with the ongoing persecution of the Kiev Caves Lavra (read the text of the appeal here).
The hierarchs, led by His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine, waited outside for several hours, but in the end had to leave when the authorities sounded an air raid alarm.
Met. Luke responded to the incident on his Telegram channel yesterday.
The authorities’ disregard for the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, “which culminated in a low-grade show with an air raid alarm,” is a spit upon both the hierarchs and the millions of Orthodox faithful. It’s also a spit upon peace and stability, the hierarch writes.
It’s also a spit upon the saints of the Kiev Caves, whom the “newly revealed God-fighters today describe as ‘museum exhibits’ and plan to transfer into the hands of the new ‘renovationists,’” His Eminence emphasizes.
“Of course, having the power, you can trample on any human laws,” Met. Luke continues. “And you can mock those who are trying with all their might to save our people from disaster. After all, there are also spiritual laws. It is precisely these laws that lie at the foundation of our being.”
In waiting outside the Office of the President, the Synod was not showing “subservience to the authorities,” but rather “an example of how to act like a Christian… Yesterday there was an attempt to strive for peace not in words, but in deeds.”
And for their Christian behavior, they were “spat upon, laughed at, photographed, and insulted by people passing by,” Met. Luke reveals. “But they also mocked Christ, spat on Him,” when Pilate had Him crucified.
Unfortunately, the authorities have no concept of the prayerful support of the saints: “Have the modern Neros thought about what would happen if the saints of the Kiev Caves removed their prayerful protection over the capital of Ukraine? Did it occur to them that the intensification of the persecution of the Church leads to devastating consequences for the whole country?”
The authorities should read War and the Bible by St. Nikolai Velimirović, where they could learn that the Lord grants peace and prosperity to the people on the basis of the virtue of the leaders. “For the sake of the virtue of the leaders, the Lord averts the attackers and grants the people victory.”
Conversely, if the leaders become proud, they fall away from God, and “the Lord severely punishes both the leaders and the people.”
In conclusion, His Eminence asks: “Who will be defeated by depriving the UOC of the Kiev Caves Lavra? After all, we know that even the slightest shock in the spiritual sphere is a harbinger of great catastrophes and disasters in our everyday lives.”
