Hilandar, the Serbian Orthodox monastery on Mt. Athos, is celebrating its 825th anniversary this year.
The Serbian Church and the monastery have marked the anniversary with various events throughout the year. The main celebration was held this weekend at the monastery, marked by the All-Night Vigil and Divine Liturgy.

Abbot Ephraim of Vatopaidi Monastery joined the celebration at the invitation of Abbot Metodije of Hilandar, reports the Orthodoxia News Agency.
Following the Vigil, Fr. Ephraim spoke about the special relationship between the two monasteries. In particular, Prince Rastko Nemanjić became a monk at Vatopaidi, taking the name Sava. He later became the first archbishop of the autocephalous Serbian Orthodox Church, and remains the most beloved Serbian saint to this day.
He was joined at Vatopaidi by his father the emperor, venerated as St. Symeon the Myrrh-Gusher.

After several years, Sts. Symeon and Sava asked Vatopaidi for a parcel of land where the ancient Hilandar Monastery once stood. The elders of the monastery agreed and thus Hilandar was rebuilt. Since then, the abbot of Vatopaidi has been invited to the monastery anniversary every year.
