Multiple videos have appeared online showing Greek Orthodox nuns refusing to leave their monasteries, even as wildfires rage all around them.

Yesterday, the Twitter page of the Greek police published a video showing nuns chanting prayers as they looked out over the fires, and police officers trying to convince them to evacuate to safety.

“The police are making every effort to convince nuns to evacuate a convent in Mandara,” the Tweet reads.

Greek outlets identify the monastery as the Convent of Panagia Gorgoepikou. The fire seems to be raging uncontrollably, already enveloping the settlement of Nea Zoi, from which more than 500 residents have already fled.

And in the village of Agios Charalambos in Corinthia, a dramatic scene with a nun refusing to leave the church and even going closer to the fire was caught on camera by the Greek outlet OPEN.

The OPEN reporter asks: “Aren’t you afraid?” to which the nun replies: “If God is going to burn me, I’m not afraid.”

The journalist eventually led the nun to a safe place.
