Long-time bishop of Thessaloniki resigns

Metropolitan Anthimos (Roussas), who has led the Metropolis of Thessaloniki for nearly two decades, submitted his letter of resignation to the Archbishop of Athens on Monday.

The Metropolis of Thessaloniki announced yesterday:

We hereby wish to inform you that yesterday, Monday, the August 7, 2023, His Eminence Metropolitan Anthimos of Thessaloniki, duly submitted his resignation and placed himself at the disposal of His Beatitude the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Ieronymos, and the Permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece concerning him.

Met. Anthimos, who has been a hierarch for 49 years, including 19 in Thessaloniki, has been in poor health in recent years.

The Metropolis of Thessaloniki is among the “New Lands” that diocese that while administered as part of the Church of Greece, are formally part of the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

Met. Anthimos (born Dionysios Roussas) was born in Salmoni, Pyrgos, Ilia, in 1934. He studied philology and theology. He was ordained a deacon in 1964 and a priest in 1965. He was elected and ordained Metropolitan of Alexandroupolis in 1974.

In 2004 he was elected as Metropolitan of Thessaloniki. Among other things, he was editor of “Voice of the Lord” journal (1965-1972), press secretary of the Holy Synod, and for three years a member of the Council of National Radio and Television.

He authored many studies. He is an honorary doctor of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Thessaloniki.
